2015 Elections: We Will Deploy Corpers To Crisis-Ridden Northern States – NYSC Boss

NYSC Boss, Brig. Gen. Johnson Olawumi, today said the commission will deploy Corps members to the Northern region for the 2015 elections despite the killing of Corps members in those areas during the last 2011 General elections.

The NYSC boss was confident that there is adequate security measures already put in place to protect the lives of the corps members.

Olawumi, who stated this at the inauguration of the batch ‘C’ of the 2014 corps members in Ikare-Akoko area of Ondo State, said the organisation had learnt from the mistakes of 2011 and would be ready to allow corps members to participate in election duties.
It would be recalled that some corps members that participated in the 2011 elections in some states in the northern part of the country were killed by political thugs after the results of the presidential election were announced.

According to him, the decision to deploy corp members for the exercise was that of the federal government, saying the agreement with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) over the issue still stands.

He noted that the contributions of the corp members to the development of the electoral system of the country could not be over emphasized, adding that the challenges of the past would not detter the process.

Olawumi explained that Nigerians had realised that since the youth corps members started participating in the elections of the country in 2011, the results had been acceptable and commendable by the people.
He said, “The decision for corp members to take part in election was taken by government and for the simple reason that they are well dispersed all over the nooks and crannies of the country and I want to state categorically that since corp membrrs have started taken part in elections in Nigeria, our elections have continued to gain credibility.

“The agreement between NYSC and INEC is still there and what that means is that corp members will take part in 2015 elections all over Nigeria whenever election will be held as long as there will be election, they be part of it. However, I must state clearly that we are not sleeping, we are learnjng from our past mistakes, we have studied what happenec in the last election and we have put measures in place for the safety and security of corp members.

“You can all recall what happened in Ekiti and in Osun, two elections that were adjudged to be very fair and corp members were particularly singled out and commended for all the roles they played in the elections, for this coming election, they are eager to go but on our part we have put a lot of measures in place to guarantee their safety and security”.

The Ondo State Coordinator of NYSC, Alhaji Olanrewaju Kuoye, said 2400 corp members were deployed in the state but 2395 had registered as at the commencement of the ceremony.
